A nature strip is a narrow patch of grass or vegetation that separates the sidewalk or footpath from the road. It is also known as a median strip, verge, boulevard, greenbelt or parkway depending on the regional dialect or the geographic location. The nature strip can serve as a buffer or barrier between the pedestrian and vehicular traffic, prevent erosion or runoff, and provide a habitat for wildlife or aesthetic value to the streetscape. In some areas, the nature strip is also used for utility purposes such as placing utility poles, street signs, or fire hydrants. Regardless of the term used, the nature strip is an essential element of the urban landscape and should be maintained and preserved for the benefit of the community.
