Nontricyclic drugs refer to a group of medications that do not belong to the class of tricyclic antidepressants. These drugs are used to treat a variety of conditions ranging from anxiety and depression to chronic pain and neuropathy. Alternative synonyms for nontricyclic drugs include "second-generation antidepressants," "atypical antidepressants," and "newer antidepressants." The term "serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)" is also commonly used, as this class of medications primarily targets the reuptake of these two neurotransmitters. Examples of nontricyclic drugs include venlafaxine, duloxetine, and bupropion. While these medications may have different mechanisms of action, they are all effective in alleviating symptoms of various mental health and neurological disorders.
