Quadrigesima Sunday is the first Sunday of Lent in the Christian liturgical calendar. This day is also called the Sunday of the Fourtieth Day, as it falls around 40 days before Easter Sunday. It is often referred to as the Second Sunday of Lent, as it follows Ash Wednesday. Another name for Quadrigesima Sunday is Laetare Sunday, which means "Rejoice Sunday" in Latin. This reflects a break in the penitential character of Lent to give hopeful encouragement to Christians. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, this Sunday is known as the Sunday of Orthodoxy, in honor of the restoration of the use of icons during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Michael IX in 843 AD.
