Textualism is a legal philosophy which states that a court should interpret a law by focusing primarily on the text of the statute rather than the legislative history or other extrinsic sources. There are several synonyms for textualism, including strict constructionism, originalism, and literalism. Strict constructionism is a legal philosophy that also emphasizes a narrow interpretation of the text of a law, while originalism focuses on adherence to the original intent of the framers of the Constitution. Literalism takes a similar approach to textualism, insisting on a strict interpretation of the words in a text without regard to context or intent. All of these legal philosophies fundamentally prioritize a strict and unambiguous interpretation of legal texts.
