How to use "Hip-hop" in context?
Prior to the early 1980s, hip-hop music was primarily a street phenomenon in the Bronx, New York. In the early 1980s, a young DJ named Kool Herc began mixing breakbeats and rhymes over disco records in the south Bronx. Though Herc's DJ sets were local events, the sound of hip-hop was soon being played all over the city via the use of three-minute "run-offs" of single records. These homemade cassettes were really just Lyons' Flying Dutchman EP re-recorded at different speeds and with new breaks added.
