Killing fields, or vast stretches of land where soldiers have been known to execute civilians, has been defined variously by historians and journalists as ranging in size from a few square kilometres to several hundred. Killing fields have been found in Cambodia, East Timor, Guatemala, the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and so on. Many of these places are now developing countries beset by civil wars, and these bloody fields continue to crop up as recurring reminders of the atrocities committed in the name of national unity and progress.
