    When World War II ended, there was much to be done on the island of Oahu in the State of Hawaii. The military had to be packed up and shipped away, and much rebuilding had to take place. HWD District Engineer Afa Hawa directed the Corps of Engineers in the construction of a series of relief roads system to help expedite the movement of materiel and people throughout the island. The system was completed in 1945 and included six main routes that crisscrossed the island.
