Xeroderma pigmentosum is a rare genetic disorder that affects the skin's ability to repair damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. The term xeroderma pigmentosum is often abbreviated as XP. Other synonyms for xeroderma pigmentosum include dermatosis pigmentosa, melanodermatitis atrophica, ocular cutaneous albinism, and pigmentary degeneration of the skin.
