The "big stink" of the 1990s was a term used to describe the ongoing environmental activism of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an environmental non-profit organization. The term was originally coined by Sierra Club executive director Carl Pope in a speech he gave at the National Press Club in May of 1990. The phrase's most famous use came in a speech given by California governor Pete Wilson in December of that year, in which he described the NRDC as the "big stink" of the environmental movement.
