There are a few different genera and species of hippopotamus within the hippopotamus family. The genus xenicohippus consists of two species, the East African hippopotamus and the West African hippopotamus. These two species are the only ones within the genus xenicohippus. East African hippopotamus are found in Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda, while West African hippopotamus are found in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Gabon. There are also subspecies of each of these species, but these are not always recognized by experts and are not listed in most taxonomies.
