Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was born to a large and literary family in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 7, 1859. He was the son of the world-renowned Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., and Louisa Loring. His older brother was the poet and author James Russell Lowell and his younger brother was the artist William Wendell Holmes.
